What MSP covers and what it does not
MSP covers psychiatrists, usually with a referral from a family doctor. Private psychologists and counsellors are outside MSP and are paid out of pocket or through insurance.[8] Private sessions can be expensive, so many people look first at the free and low-cost services below.
Free and low-cost options
| Service | Who it is for and how it works |
|---|---|
| BounceBack | Free cognitive behavioural therapy coaching from CMHA, with Mandarin and Cantonese available; you can self-refer online but need a family doctor or nurse practitioner on file |
| Foundry | Free for ages 12 to 24 and their families, no referral needed; Foundry Virtual is also available at 1-833-308-6379 |
| Here2Talk | Free 24-hour support for students at BC post-secondary institutions; Mandarin and Cantonese can be requested |
| S.U.C.C.E.S.S. | Chinese-language counselling, free when funded and otherwise on an income-based fee |
| Workplace EAP | Employee and family assistance programs; many employers offer a number of free sessions, usually open to family members too. Ask HR |
| Employer benefits | Psychologists and Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) usually have an annual limit; use it before it resets at year end |
Details for BounceBack and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. are on their own websites.[1][2][7] Foundry describes its services on its site,[3] and Here2Talk was announced by the BC government.[4]
